Merlin Castell: Drama Club July 03, 2008

Merlin Castell: Drama ClubJuly 03, 2008
The scene: Los Angeles designer Merlin Castell has a flair for the dramatic. So it was only fitting that his recent runway show—dubbed “Galactic Superstars”—would draw fellow limelighter and reality-show diva Janice Dickinson. Rail thin and dressed in an oversize hat and black eye patch, Dickinson was there filming an episode for her fourth season of Oxygen’s “Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.”
Equally scene-stealing was Castell, who took his runway bow in a white jumpsuit, stiletto heels and a turban.
And then there were the runway looks. Castell showed a diverse collection of ladylike tweed and satin separates, second-skin catsuits, dramatic gowns, and dresses, some with Watteau backs, cape sleeves and yards of lace. The designer went big with his details, adding sweeping semi-circular piping to coat pockets and oversize pleated ruffles to a tuxedo shirt-and-pants ensemble. Castell accessorized his looks with sculptural hats and huge headdresses made from hair, feathers and beads. Dramatic corset belts and harness styles came in silver and gold. The models sported spectral white and gray face paint, and each struck an exaggerated stance for the photographers during their runway turn.
The show featured a musical performance by Luz Rios, and “Dancing With the Stars” vet Karina Smirnoff was among the models walking the runway. —Alison A. Nieder
